Laptop vs Tablet PC Ergonomic Stand Comparison

For this comparison our core audience is expected to be people who prioritize mobility and work mostly in browser or with cloud computing (Writers, Developers, Marketers) - who are looking at ergonomics as an added bonus.

We compare the best ergonomic mobile stands for Laptop & Tablets.

Laptop, Stand & Bag

Laptop, Stand & Bag

Roost / Nexstand & Macbook Pro 13in.

The current ergomonic stand most popular with traditional laptop users. As it doesn't have a tablet mode, we will need to include an extra keyboard and mouse. We also need a laptop bag to carry all the items. For the comparison we assume a 13 inch Macbook.

Tablet PC & Stand / Case

Tablet PC & Stand / Case

Silesian Case / Stand & Surface Pro 12.9 in.

The rising contender on the market is a new case from Silesian. It's oriented towards Surface Pro & Kickstand Tablets with an interesting approach to the ergonomics. Its an all in one solution. with the bag / case and stand functions included. We used a Surface Pro and also included the typecover extension so we can go without the extra hardware.

Price
Laptop & Stand

Laptop & Stand

$250 USD

Laptop Stand ($80 USD)
Wireless Keyboard ($95 USD)
Bluetooth Mouse ($25 USD)
Laptop Bag ($50 USD)

To make a fair comparison we have priced a pretty nice keyboard with comparable quality and features to the Microsoft Typecover.

Tablet & Silesian Case

Tablet & Silesian Case

$160 USD

Silesian Case ($140 USD)
Typecover Extension ($20)
Surface Typecover (BYO)

With the typecover extension cable, the tablet case doesn't require an extra keyboard or mouse which makes it a much cheaper bundle.

Portability

Laptop Bag @ 2708g

Laptop Stand (164g)
13 inch Macbook Pro (1370g)
Logitech K380 Keyboard (423g)
Bluetooth Mouse (100g)
Laptop Bag (650g)

While the stand itself is extremely light, it requires an additional wireless keyboard and mouse to work (both of which must have batteries) and the added bulk also requires a larger bag to carry the items. In all it's still a lighter option than the Tablet Stand / Case but with quite a lot more bulk.

Slim Briefcase @ 2974g

Microsoft Surface Pro (1240g)
Microsoft Type Cover (284g)
Silesian Type Cover Extension Cable (50g)
Silesian Ergonomic Case & Stand (1400g)

The Silesian Case is more like a Briefcase - harder and heavier than the laptop bag, it incorporates the stand, base and case into one unit. Although its heavier all up - its also more compact, easier to handle and offers better protection to your device.

Ergonomics

Laptop & Stand

Forward Leaning

The laptop stand can achieve a great elevation, but at the expense of elevation comes distance to screen. Because the front feet need to sit behind the keyboard from the users perspective - the screen ends up much further away than it would be in the laptop position. So although the screen is more elevated its also further away - and this can cause problems with reading text. The result can be a subconscous lean-forward as the body tries to give the eyes some relief.

Chin Tucked

The tablet stand adopts the new rationale that leaning forward is more impacted by distance to screen than elevation - which makes sense when you consider the massive increases in pixel density and reduction in screen sizes. By bringing the screen closer to the viewer instead of further away - even with a lower elevation it promotes a more upright / chin-tuck posture. The chin tuck is an exercise recommended by many therapists to relieve the negative symptoms of long term neck extension, so there might be some evidence for this approach.

Mobility

Laptop & Stand

Desktop Only

The laptop stand is the clear loser in this situation, not only can it not be used on anything other than a flat / clear desktop - but the back feet have a tendency to be precariously close to the back edge of the table. One small shift and your laptop could be catapulted into the floor.

Works Anywhere

The Silesian stand has a full pad base with the stand attached to it - you're going to have to push it all the way off the table before it tips, and also have your hands off the keyboard. As such the stand / case combination definitely takes the winner on this one.

Overall

Laptop & Stand

While the laptop stand is a vast improvement on a laptop alone in terms of ergonomics - when compared to the Tablet solution it comes off second best in all the key critera. Of course, this is contingent on the use cases we outlined at the top - that being a small format and lower powered computer.

If you need to use a full sized laptop with a large display - the laptop stand is still the best solution. However if you're looking at the most mobile option with great flexibility this isn't it.

Tablet & Silesian Case

Winner

The Silesian Case explores some interesting concepts for ergonomics in the 21st century with the more upright and chin-tucked posture it puts the focus on focal lenght / distance from screen as opposed to elevation. Its more compact, more protective, and we can use it wherever we want which is a massive plus. We also love that we can use the native Surface Pro Typecover without having to carry an extra keyboard or mouse. Overall as technology lovers we have to give the win to the new contender.
